The Lakeshore has several entrance points, with much of its area accessible primarily by water. Lake Superior is renowned for its cold temperatures, rough seas, fog, and sudden squalls. Boaters and paddlers should monitor marine weather forecasts and be constantly alert to changing conditions. Average daytime high temperatures range from 60 degrees Fahrenheit in May, to the upper 80s in mid-summer, to the mid-60s in September. Average lows vary from 40 degrees in May, to the upper 50s in mid-summer, to 50 degrees in September. Average water temperatures in May and June are only in the 40s. Entrance Fee-free This site is fee-free year-round. No entrance fee or pass is required. Parking/Transportation Parking, shuttle, or other transportation-related fees may apply. Little Sand Bay Visitor CenterThis seasonal visitor center is brand new in 2020. Exhibits on the grounds tell the story of Little Sand Bay and the challenges and joys of living in the North Woods, including the restored Twilite fish tug. The center offers orientation and information, camping permits, kayak safety guidance, and the America's National Parks bookstore. Bayfield HeadquartersThe park's headquarters is located in the Bayfield, WI in the old Bayfield Courthouse Building. This iconic, brownstone building is easy to recognize from Washington Ave. Headquarters offers orientation and information, camping permits, museum exhibits, a park film, and the America's National Parks bookstore. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Headquarters is open seasonally. Public WiFi is available.
Public WiFi is available at Meyers Beach and Little Sand Bay only. There are options in surrounding communities at libraries and commercial establishments. Cellular service is good in Bayfield, Washburn, and Ashland. It can be sporadic in Red Cliff, Little Sand Bay, and Meyers Beach. Cellular service on the islands is sporadic and unreliable. A VHF marine radio is best for communications when on the waters of Lake Superior. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore exists as a coastal park at the northeastern tip of the Bayfield Peninsula, the northernmost mainland point in Wisconsin. It consists of twenty–two (22) separate units (21 islands and a 12-mile mainland unit) dedicated to the preservation and public enjoyment of significant historic, scenic, natural, and recreational resources in Ashland and Bayfield Counties. |
