OMAHA, Neb. — National Park Service (NPS) Regional Director Bert Frost announced the selection of Steve Akins today as the new superintendent of President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site in Hope, Arkansas. Akins currently serves as the Safety Manager for Interior Region 2 (Southeast Region) duty stationed in Hopkins, South Carolina.“I am pleased to announce Stephen as the new superintendent of President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site,” said Regional Director Bert Frost. “The next several years are an exciting, developmental time for the park and his background in facilities, in addition to his safety manager experience, make him ideal to lead this operation into the future.”
Steve began his NPS career in 2016 after working in construction, facilities, and industrial management for over 25 years. He started with NPS in facilities at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area before moving into commercial services as an asset manager. Steve also served as Chief of Facilities at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau and Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Parks in Hawaii prior to becoming the safety manager for the South Carolina parks. He was also acting superintendent for most of calendar year 2022 at Congaree National Park.
“I am honored to be selected as the next superintendent of President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site,” said Akins. “President Clinton was instrumental in bringing diversity and inclusion policies to the White House and I am excited to join the team that helps celebrate those accomplishments and values.
Akins and his wife of over 35 years, Nyra, will be relocating to the area later this fall with their three cats and dog. They are looking forward to spending time in the great outdoors of Arkansas camping and hiking, and they also enjoy live music in their free time.
