White Sands National Park is a unique park. Drop-in programs give visitors the opportunity to explore the parks impressive geology, uniquely adapted plants and animals, learn about the parks diverse history, and even have opportunities to look at the sun! These programs are not scheduled on the park calendar. Please call ahead at (575) 479-6124 or check-in with rangers at the visitor center to find out where and when these programs are being held. WhenDrop-in programs are programs that occur randomly throughout the week based on ranger availability. You can check in with the front desk at the visitor center to learn about any drop-in programs occuring the day of your visit. Due to weather conditions at White Sands, most drop-ins occur earlier in the morning. ReservationsReservations are not required or permitted. WhereDrop-in programs can occur anywhere within the park, but most of them occur around the visitor center or on the Interdune Boardwalk trail. Exploring those areas gives you the best chance of running into an exciting surprise program! CostProgram is free. Park entrance fees apply. Program lengthProgram lengths vary. Safety InformationBe prepared for warm and sunny afternoon temperatures. Bring a hat and wear sunglasses. The sand reflects the sun so apply sunscreen to all exposed areas even in winter. Wear loose, light-colored clothing to help keep your body cooler, and bring one liter of water per person for the sunset stroll. Bring a jacket for the cooler evening;as the sun goes down so does the temperature. AccessibilityThe park's drop-in programs most often occur in areas accessible to everyone. Please check with the visitor center front desk to learn about drop-in opportunities and where they are located. Service animals are allowed at all park facilities open to the general public. RestroomsToilets are located at the visitor center and an accessible vault toilet is located at the interdune boardwalk trailhead. Multiple vault toilets can be found throughout the dunes drive of the park. SeatingSeating varies depending on the location of the program. PetsPets are allowed as long as they are non-disruptive, on a leash no longer than six feet (2 m), and under physical control at all times. Pets, like humans, should leave only footprints. Pick up after your pet(s) and Leave No Trace. |
