Water-Based Activities

Water activities are the primary draw for many visitors. Whiskeytown Lake offers 36 miles of shoreline for boating, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, water skiing, swimming, scuba diving, and fishing. With a full reservoir in the summer, the lake is a perfect spot for aquatic adventures in a beautiful mountain setting.

  • Note: Personal watercraft (PWC) such as jet skis are prohibited on Whiskeytown Lake.
  • Fishing: A California fishing license is required for all fishing activities.

Water Safety - Life Jacket and Boating License Requirements

Before heading out on the water, make sure you're familiar with life jacket requirements and boating license regulations. All federal and state boating laws apply to ensure a safe day on the lake for everyone.

  • Life Jackets: Required for all individuals on the water, with specific guidelines based on age and activity.
  • Boating License: Depending on your age and the type of vessel you’re operating, a boating license may be required.

  • Crystal Creek Falls Trail: A short 0.4-mile paved path leading to a picturesque cascade, wheelchair accessible.
  • Boulder Creek Falls Trail: A challenging 2.8-mile hike featuring a 1,000-foot climb and multiple stream crossings en route to the waterfall.

Land-Based Activities

Beyond the lake, Whiskeytown’s land area provides ample opportunities for birdwatching, camping, picnicking, wildlife viewing, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The landscape extends up to Shasta Bally, reaching an elevation of 6,199 feet, offering beautiful views and diverse ecosystems.

Gold Panning & Historic Sites

Step back in time at the Tower House Historic District, which dates back to the California Gold Rush. Here, you can experience gold panning, explore interpretive exhibits, and visit the Camden House, built in 1852 and later expanded.

Safety & Trail Etiquette

Summer temperatures at Whiskeytown can reach triple digits between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If you're planning to hike or explore during these months, it's best to head out early in the morning. Regardless of the season, always bring plenty of water, let someone know where you're going, and stay safe by locking your vehicle and taking valuables with you.

A big thank you to our Trail Steward Volunteers for helping maintain and monitor the conditions of our trails, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
