"Whether poet, novelist, musician, singer, painter, photographer, or other visual or performing artist, please apply if you are interested," notes Superintendent Josh Hoines. "Parks are inspirational places and they can become even more inspirational through art."
Applications will be reviewed by a professional jury and selected artists will get to camp in the park for two to three weeks where they will explore and draw inspiration from the national recreation area's historic structures, recreational features, mountains, woodlands, and water. The inspiration gained from the land will be used by the artist to create at least one piece of work during the residency, and Whiskeytown will have the right to use this work digitally for educational purposes (the artist will still have sales and reproduction rights). The artist will also conduct a talk or other public outreach spotlighting their experience and work in the park. Upon completion of the residency, artist will receive a $1500-$2000 stipend courtesy of Western National Parks Association.
Applicants should submit the following to scott_einberger@nps.gov no later than January 8th, 2023:
1. Artist resume and exhibition record.
2. Statement of intent for the residency at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, including your reason for wanting to be in residence, what you would like to work on, and why Whiskeytown interests you.
3. Three to five samples of artistic work in the media you hope to focus on during your residency.
4. Preferred residency dates and any special requests or needs.
