Make a Difference: Volunteer at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

Volunteering at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is a rewarding way to connect with nature, preserve history, and support your local community. Whether you enjoy leading outdoor activities, maintaining trails, or helping to protect cultural sites, there’s a role for everyone. From individual volunteer positions to group service events, you’ll be contributing to the protection and enhancement of one of Northern California’s most treasured natural areas. Join us to make a lasting impact and help ensure Whiskeytown remains a special place for future generations.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Kayak and Paddleboard Assistant

  • This volunteer position will be coming back for the summer, check back soon for more details!
  • Assist interpretive staff with kayak and paddleboard programs.
  • Help visitors safely use equipment and assist in keeping the tour group together on the water.
  • Practice your kayak and paddleboard skills while supporting park programs!

Trail Steward

  • Learn More About this Opportunity.
  • Rove assigned trails to provide an additional National Park Service presence.
  • Perform minor trail maintenance using hand tools to clear vegetation, remove hazards, and pick up litter.
  • Greet trail users and offer park information.

Tower House Historic District Volunteer

  • Learn More About this Opportunity.
  • Assist with the periodic cleaning of Camden House and the rock-lined ditches and sidewalks.
  • Light weeding of Camden Yard and New Orchard.
  • Serve as a district docent, providing visitors with information and answering their questions.

Native Plant Garden Caretaker

  • Learn More about this Opportunity.
  • Remove and properly dispose of dead plants.
  • Pull weeds and remove non-native species from the garden.
  • Plant new native plants and assist with improving garden signage.

Group Volunteer Opportunities

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area welcomes clubs, organizations, and scout groups interested in giving back to their community. Contact us if you’re looking to host a volunteer event or explore partnership opportunities!

Annual Days of Service

Each year, four special days are set aside for community service projects at Whiskeytown. These large-scale events are open to the public and organizations. Keep an eye on our social media for event details. The annual days include:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January)
  • Earth Day (April)
  • National Day of Service (September)
  • Veterans Day (November)
