VICKSBURG, Miss. – On May 22, 2024, Vicksburg National Military Park will commemorate the anniversary of the Union Assaults on May 22, 1863, with two special Ranger-led battle walks, focusing on the attacks on the Railroad Redoubt and the 2nd Texas Lunette.
The first walk at 10 AM, titled “Assault on Railroad Redoubt,” will cover the attacks by Union forces on the crucial fortification guarding the Southern Railroad into Vicksburg, the brief breakthrough by the United States Army, and the subsequent counterattack by Confederate forces. The program will begin at 10 AM at Tour Stop #13 (Railroad Redoubt), and last about an hour.
The second walk at 2 PM, titled “The Battery Boys from Chicago,” will cover the assault on the 2nd Texas Lunette from the perspective of the Chicago Mercantile Battery, and the desperate struggle at the fortification along the old Baldwin Ferry Road. The program will meet at 2 PM outside of the Visitor Center, and will walk to the Anshe Chesed Jewish Cemetery, where the 2nd Texas Lunette was located. The program will last about an hour.
The programs will include standing and walking up to a mile over hills. Please contact the park for information concerning accommodations. Please wear closed-toed shoes, be prepared for warm weather, and bring plenty of water. Programs are subject to change due to weather conditions.
