• Heat Warning and Trail Closure

  Date Posted: 4/11/2025Alert, Severity, information, Heat Warning and Trail ClosureBeginning April 11. 2025 when the National Weather Service issues a Heat Warning for Roosevelt, AZ or the heat reaches 105 degrees F, the Lower and Upper Cliff Dwelling trail will be closed. Water is required to hike the trails.

• Lower Cliff Dwelling Trail Open 8:00 am to Noon

The Lower Cliff Dwelling trail will open at 8:00 am and visitors must begin their hike by noon. The Visitor Center will remain open 8:00 am-4:00 pm. The Upper Cliff Dwellings will close for the Season. more

• Visitor Center Bookstore now Cashless

  Alert, Severity, information, Visitor Center Bookstore now CashlessStarting today, our Western National Parks Association Bookstore will no longer accept cash. We will accept all major credit or debit cards, including mobile payments.

• Tonto National Monument has moved to cashless fee collection

Access to Tonto National Monument is as follows:

Open 8 am-5 pm:

• Visitor Center and Museum
• Park Store
• Picnic Area

Hours Vary:

• Lower Cliff Dwelling Trail and Cactus Patch Trail.
  • May-August: Visitors must begin their hike before 12 noon. Trail may close due to excessive heat, lightning, bee activity, or flooding.
  • September-May: Visitors must begin their hike before 4 pm. Trail may close due to excessive heat, lightning, bee activity, or flooding.
• Upper Cliff Dwelling Trail available only with a guided tour November-April. For more information, visit the Guided Tours page.

Regular Closures:

• Thanksgiving Day: CLOSED
• Christmas Eve: Park closes at 1:45 pm. Lower Cliff Dwelling Trail closes at 12 pm.
• Christmas Day: CLOSED
• New Years Eve: Park closes at 1:45 pm. Lower Cliff Dwelling Trail closes at 12 pm.
• New Years Day: CLOSED
