Are you interested in discovering what makes Tonto National Monument special? Do you want to earn a cool Tonto National Monument patch? Then this virtual scavenger hunt is for you. Explore Tonto’s website to learn about the cultural and natural resources. Then answer the questions written below or on the PDF document (127 KB) and return to have a patched mailed to you.

Hint: All answers can be found under the Learn about the Park tab on the Tonto National Monument website (www.nps.gov/tont).

  1. What is the name of the group that built the dwellings? How did they get that name? Think about what future archeologists might name your culture.

  2. Which two groups lived in the Salt River Basin after the Salado?

  3. Read descriptions and look at photos of the upper and lower cliff dwellings. Make a list of similarities and differences between the two. What similarities do you see at your home?

  4. Find a photo of Salado Pottery. What is your favorite Salado Pottery style? Try drawing some of the designs yourself. Or, if you’re feeling inspired, create your own and show a friend.

  5. Angeline Mitchell was the first person to write about the cliff dwellings. Find and read the excerpt of her diary on the website. Who is a teacher that had a lasting impact on you?

  6. Adolf Bandelier was the first archeologist to survey the dwellings. Read his description of some rooms in the Monument, then try writing a similar description of your room. Is there food? Do you have work spread out across a desk? What’s on the walls? Think like an archeologist! What do these objects say about the person who lives here?

  7. Look through the common animals found at Tonto National Monument. What might you see around your neighborhood?

  8. The cliff dwellings were built in caves. Were the caves natural or dug out by humans? Try to think of a way geology affects your community

  9. Theodore Roosevelt created Tonto National Monument in 1907. Do you think it is important that we protect this Monument? Why or why not?
