Plan A Field Trip

All students are able to explore the Lower Cliff Dwelling during a field trip to Tonto National Monument.

All grades are welcome to visit and learn at Tonto National Monument. We offer a variety of multi-disiplinary and curriculum-driven programs to meet your needs.

We offer ranger-led field trip programs, in-classroom ranger programs, and outreach events. We want to be an asset for you and your classroom!

To Make a Reservation

Field trips to the monument will include a hike up to the Lower Cliff Dwelling which is a 1-mile round trip hike that climbs 350 feet in elevation. The trail is paved but is steep. For smaller groups, the field trip last around 1.5 hours including restroom breaks. If you are requesting a larger group that needs to be split in two, plan for the field trip will last a little under 3 hours including a lunch break if necessary. There is an area on site for classes to each lunch either before or after the field trip ends.If you are interested in arranging a field trip visit, please complete an Education Reservation Request Form.

If your school is Title 1, we can also offer grants for school busses to and from the monument. Due to weather and staffing, field trips are generally scheduled from the months of January to the end of March, although exceptions can be made depending on availability. Additionally, field trips are optimized for groups of no more than 60 students (two classes). Should your class be larger than this, you will need to schedule field trips for more than one day.

For field trips for 4^th grade classes, Tonto National Monument may also be able to issue free 4^th Grade passes to students.
