Archaeology

The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve contains over 200 archaeological sites representing thousands of years of continuous human history, including Archaic shell rings and the first site where investigations focused on the archaeology of slavery and plantation life.

Archaeology is on-going at Timucuan Preserve and we are constantly growing our knowledge of the past through the work of archaeologists. You can help by:

• Never digging or using a metal detector in the park.
• Leaving artifacts where you find them but reporting disturbed sites to a ranger.
• Acting respectfully in places that are sacred or culturally important.
• Asking questions!
