Battlefield Footsteps is a program that focuses on character traits that can be learned from the Battle of Gettysburg. Teachers select one of three traits to focus on: leadership, courage, or determination. Students will then "walk in the footsteps" of one of three different units while discovering their roles and action in the battle. The units can be either the 9th Massachusetts Battery (Courage); the 15th Alabama (Determination); or 6th Wisconsin (Leadership)

Elevation Above and Below Pre-Trip Activity

For this activity students will explore the way topographic maps are used to describe elevation such as “sea level,” “below sea level,” and “above sea level.” Students will compare and contrast side view diagrams of mountains and valleys to topographic maps. Old Spanish Trail Road Trip

We’re off on a grand adventure: a road trip across the famous Old Spanish Trail! The Old Spanish Trail was an arduous 1,200 mile route between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, California, which served traders who loaded their pack mules with woolen goods from Santa Fe each fall and returned from California each spring with goods, mules, and horses. The Old Spanish Trail linked two provinces of Mexico separated by difficult topography and climatic extremes.

The Battle of Kings Mountain (October 7, 1780) was one of the most dramatic and hotly contested battles of the Revolutionary War. On an isolated ridge top in the Carolina backcountry, nearly 1000 American Patriots surrounded and overwhelmed an approximately equal number of American Loyalists.
Floodwaters in the Desert Lab Activity

For the lab activity, students will explore the way flood waters can affect the landscape and topography in the desert. Designed for early elementary students, this program uses the alphabet as a tool to teach students about Chickasaw culture. The Chickasaw Nation has historically occupied the top half of Mississippi and played an integral role in the formation and utilization of the Natchez Trace and continues to play a significant role in the culture of the community of the area.
