Moss of the 25th Infantry volunteered to test this idea. Students will view maps that show the different ecosystems, the park boundary, and the reality of how it looked both before and after human contact. They will discover if Haleakalā National Park and their protection efforts are working to preserve native species and their native habitats.

“Finding Hot Springs’ Habitats” is an environmental science program training students to “read” the many habitats of Hot Springs National Park. Students will learn about how the hot springs environment relies on a healthy ecosystem. Students analyze open air springs for water quality and thermal habitats before exploring terrestrial environments on a 0.5 mile naturalist hike. Designed for 2nd & 3rd grade Life Science lessons.

Shenandoah National Park

6th-8th Grade | Shenandoah Salamander: Climate Change Casualty or Survivor?

The Shenandoah salamander is an endangered species found only on a few rocky slopes within Shenandoah National Park. Its survival is being threatened by changing climate and habitat competition from the more common red-backed salamander. Students will conduct field research on the red-backed salamander to compare the two salamander species’ habitat requirements and determine how climate change and habitat competition are impacting the survival.
