A National Park Ranger will use Kenai Fjords National Park as a looking glass through which to observe our planet's health. The ranger will engage students with questioning, video content and other techniques in order to broaden their local and global understanding of climate change and leave them with a hopeful attitude about the future of our natural environment.

Erosion can be a major issue. It is caused by a number of factors, both manmade and natural. The effects of erosion are very evident on Arctic coastal villages that are experiencing storm surges and no longer have the added protection of longer lasting sea ice. Research indicates that both the storm surges and lost of sea ice are the result of climate change.

1. Show what happens to sea level when ice sheets melt. 2. Show what happens to sea level when icebergs melt. 3. Connect sea level changes in Miami to icesheets melting. 4. Explain that sea level changes are caused by melting/freezing of ice sheets in Antarctica/Greenland. 5. Show that communities in Florida will be affected by sea level rise. 6. Realize that South Florida has been under water many times in the geologic past. 7. Discuss ways communities can mitigate/adapt to sea level rise.

Students will learn that wind, water, and ice are the forces that drive weathering, erosion, and deposition. They will discover that some of these processes occurred long ago, and some are still occurring today. Students will make observations about the rocks and minerals that make up our sand. Students will understand that the dunes at Sleeping Bear are special and that plants that grow on them can change them, too.

What is a glacier and how is it formed? What is the difference between an icefield and an icesheet? This program will help young students gain an appreciation for our national parks and learn about Alaska’s glaciers. A park ranger will share the incredible beauty and impressive glacial features of Kenai Fjords National Park with the students, and inspire a sense of wonder and stewardship for the ice that continues to shape our planet.
