Reading Jerome Smith’s chapter in Talk That Music Talk, they will learn how Civil Rights and music were combined together in a youth organization in New Orleans called Tambourine and Fan. Using the concept of a “cultural investment,” students will then create a presentation about their own community.

LESSON 8: SHANGO AND DANSE CODAN

This lesson uses two songs that will emphasize the African influences on Zydeco music and the Kréyol language. The song SHANGO references an African spirit/diety that became important in the Creole and Black American community in Louisiana, especially among those who practiced the syncretic religious faith of Vodou, often popularly referred to as Voodoo.

This lesson concerns a strike by FLAMBEAUX, men (generally African American) in New Orleans who carry large torches to light the parades. It concerns reasons a community might become militant and the role of solidarity in such struggles. It uses music created by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park that is found on the cd Remembering 300- Arrowhead Jazz Band.
