Showing 200 results for endemic species ...
Species in Danger
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to: 1. Identify endemic and endangered species in Maui and explain why native habitats are critical to the survival of these species. 2. Understand that biodiversity of an ecosystem depends on many interconnected factors and that an effect on one factor can influence all the others. 3. Name three reasons why people should care about the loss of endemic species.

Autobiographies of Extinct and Endangered Species
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
This lesson is about why species become endangered or extinct. Students will do a case study of one extinct and one endangered species. The two biggest threats to a species survival are invasive species and habitat loss. Students will learn what an invasive species is and see visuals of habitat loss on Maui. Without intervention and management, these endangered species could disappear within the students’ lifetime.
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Students begin this activity listening to a children’s storybook that teaches them about a science concept. They will then be challenged to use their creativity to write a children’s story that young children could read to learn about invasive species. In the process of writing the book, their understanding of invasive species and their impact on the environment will be further enhanced.
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
This activity encourages students / teachers to make a difference in the area they live in and either (1) educate the public about invasive species, (2) change your lifestyle to prevent introduction of invasive species, or (3) take on a project to highlight and/or eradicate an invasive species in your area. After an introduction to the learning objective, student groups start to brainstorm ideas of things they can do in their community and create an action plan.
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
There are many different and varied invasive species, but for this lesson the key points are that the species is (1) not native and (2) causes harm to either the economy or the environment. This activity will allow students to focus on one invasive species and present the information that they find about their species to classmates in a classroom go-around at the end of their research.

Biodiversity Unit Field Trip
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Biodiversity is critical to the health of native habitats and species in Haleakalā National Park. Many plants on the slopes of Haleakalā are endemic and evolved to live in these unique habitats. Explore these habitats and learn why biodiversity is important and how Haleakalā National Park protects these rare, endemic, and endangered species.
