Rocky Rangers: Elementary Earth Science
Climate Science in Focus: Earth as a System
7th-12th Grade | Exploring Earth Science
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade

This curriculum has 5 (five) teacher-led lesson plans that provide in-depth opportunities to study different earth science processes and concepts. The lessons include pre-visit and post-visit classroom activities as well as on-site activity descriptions, maps, and worksheets for the park field trip. The lesson that is ranger-led can be viewed on the ranger-led field trips page.
How Rock Layers Work: Middle School Earth Science
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
9th-12th Grade | Exploring Earth Science: The Shenandoah Salamander and Climate Change
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade

The Shenandoah salamander is an endangered species found only on a few rocky slopes within Shenandoah National Park. Its survival is being threatened by changing climate and habitat competition from the more common red-backed salamander. Students will conduct field research on the red-backed salamander to compare the two salamander species’ habitat requirements and determine how climate change and habitat competition are impacting the survival.
9th-12th Grade | Virtual Exploring Earth Science: The Shenandoah Salamander and Climate Change
- Type: Distance Learning
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade

The Shenandoah salamander is an endangered species found only on a few rocky slopes within Shenandoah National Park. Its survival is being threatened by changing climate and habitat competition. Students will virtually explore and research to determine how climate change and habitat competition could be impacting the survival of the Shenandoah salamander. Students will collaborate and present potential survival plans for the species. Two 60 minute sessions

The Science of Sled Dogs
- Type: Distance Learning
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

Did you know that park rangers use sled dogs to perform winter work in Denali National Park and Preserve? But why? Join us to learn about why these amazing animals are perfectly adapted to a cold, subarctic environment. Take a deeper dive into what makes the tails, fur, feet, and dispositions of Denali’s sled dogs so good for their snowy, hard work!
Introduction to Citizen Science
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade

Citizen Science is the involvement of everyday people in making scientific observations of the world around us. These observations address real world problems and contribute to scientific research projects. Citizen Science initiatives provide opportunities for the public to collect data in the field and report findings to databases used by professional scientists. Introduce your students to this growing field, in which amateur scientists can contribute meaningful observations to science.
Earth's Layers
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade
Earth Blocks
- Type: Student Activities
- Grade Levels: High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade
This activity provides a glimpse into the methods used by geologists as they study the rocky layers at Mount Rainier. Students manipulate "Earth Blocks" into the likely sequences observed at Mount Rainier, and practice their logic skills as they employ the Law of Superposition.

Exploring Climate Science: Watersheds
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

In “Exploring Climate Science (Watersheds),” students will explore the local watershed to learn how communities, the region, and state are connected by water. The students will be able to: 1. State the watershed(s) in the area and explain why it is important. 2. Show how the watershed connects their town to others in the area/region
