Electrical Conductivity STEM Backpack, Grades 6-8

Heat, Light, and Sound

In these lessons, students investigate how energy moves through desert ecosystems in the form of heat, light, and sound. Students learn about insulators for heat and how sunscreen works to protect skin from UV light. They use sound to search for birds, and lenses to complete a scavenger hunt. The lesson concludes with a discussion about how too much heat, light, or sound can be harmful.

Two famous Tuskegee Experiments were conducted in the small town of Tuskegee, Alabama between 1932 and 1972. One conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service (Public Health) beginning in 1932, later called the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The other conducted by the U.S. Army Air Corps (Air Corps) beginning in 1941, the participants of which were later dubbed "Tuskegee Airmen"

The Human Impact on the Living Planet Virtual Field Trip

Tracing the water cycle, from precipitation to surface water runoff, students investigate how humans’ impact the health of the environment. Through stories of everyday activities, students make predictions, conduct observations, and formulate conclusions as our staff conduct live experiments. After observing the test of a simple water filter, students propose changes to improve the design and discuss ways in which their community can reduce its impact on Earth’s resources.
