When do the first red maple buds open and when is the first spring peeper heard? Phenology is the study of the timing of seasonal events. Students will discover nature's calendar, make observations along Acadia's trails, and conduct investigations in the forest to learn how citizens are aiding scientists in protecting Acadia.
This program is broken into three different activities: exploration of the Sieur de Mont Nature Center, a hike along one of Acadia's important watersheds, and finally a citizen science "bioblitz" where students document the diverse species of plants and animals they find in a short period of time.
Tracking Nature's Seasons is designed for fifth grade classes around the topic of phenology, or the timeline of when nature's patterns occur seasonally, and ties into Next Generation Life and Earth Science Standards.
Program includes time off trail, use of technology, and is 3.5 hours in length.
