Students will learn about maps and what information can be gathered from them through the use of maps of the lower Columbia River. Using math and timing their own walking speeds students will be able to determine how long it would take to drive from one location to Fort Clatsop, walk to Fort Clatsop, and how much that would cost.

Class of Discovery

Class of Discovery is the most in-depth ranger/teacher conducted program at the park. Students become the members of the expedition while they visit the park and participate in hands-on activities to learn what life was like during the time the Corps of Discovery stayed at Fort Clatsop.

"Cross and Examine"

This lesson plan is intended for use at Fort Clatsop but can be used with any area with a slope or hill. This lesson will have students look at the expedition's ideas on crossing the river or moving up stream for their winter camp site. It will help teach students how to measure incline and the importance of choosing a good camp site.

Life at the Fort Ranger Guided Field Trip

This program explorers what life was like for the "Corps of Discovery" at Fort Clatsop in 1805-06. Groups of 20 students rotate through 30-minute activity sessions coordinated by the park staff: Visitor Center "Exhibit Seek and Find," "Nature Walk" and an interactive interpretive program with a ranger in buckskin at the fort. Concludes with a Flintlock Muzzle Loading Rifle or Musket program.

Students will have the opportunity to go on a bird walk led by a park ranger. They will also "migrate" between three adaptation stations where they participate in hands-on activities related to beak, wing, and foot adaptations of birds.

Map making was an important part of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Maps of the era were often just best guesses as to what could possibly lie in the middle of the continent. In this lesson your students will learn about the maps of the expedition and even make one of their own based on descriptions.

Not able to flex your schedule to fit into one of the ranger-conducted programs? The park offers a self-guided visit options: "Diligent Pursuit." This program allows your group to experience the park on its own. No formal ranger-conducted fort program is included with these programs, but your group may join any public programs that are available.

Using the Webquest Slides, students will explore and learn about the important members and contributors to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Each slide will have links) to National Park web pages with information about each member or group. For each member, students find four facts and write a sentence about their role (contribution) to the expedition. This activity can be done in a handful of ways, with the suggested method being a Jigsaw.
