6th-8th Grade | Shenandoah Salamander: Climate Change Casualty or Survivor?

The Shenandoah salamander is an endangered species found only on a few rocky slopes within Shenandoah National Park. Its survival is being threatened by changing climate and habitat competition from the more common red-backed salamander. Students will conduct field research on the red-backed salamander to compare the two salamander species’ habitat requirements and determine how climate change and habitat competition are impacting the survival.

Explore the "Great Crusade" with General Eisenhower and the Men of D-Day in this virtual education program. Students will discover the events of D-Day through the leadership principles of General Eisenhower and the sacrifices of real soldiers who fought and died on D-Day. This program gives students a chance to examine primary source documents and research real D-Day casualties who are buried in Gettysburg National Cemetery.

Pickett's Charge: A Critical Look

Battle, as shown by "Pickett's Charge", was a sad, costly, and frightening experience during which soldiers exhibited many examples of courage, devotion, fighting ability and fear. The Pickett's Charge student education program seeks to personalize the battle by having each student focus on the life and sacrifice of one soldier. By role-playing the soldiers in one regiment involved in the infantry assault, it is hoped that the emotional context of battle is revealed.

Slyder Family Farm (Formerly Called Impact of War)

The battle of Gettysburg affected not just the soldiers who fought it, but also the civilians in and around the town - destroying property, stability and livelihoods. The goal of this program and its accompanying materials is to instill a sense of ownership for the Slyder Family Farm in the minds of all the students who visit it, thereby establishing a sensibility and connection to the impact that wars have on entire generations of Americans - soldier and civilian.
