In 1858, Fort Scott was the scene of threats, drama, and violence as feuding parties clashed over the issues of freedom, slavery and property rights. People with strong views from all perspectives on the slavery issues clashed at Fort Scott. in many cases, people weren't fighting about slavery, but for their own freedom, as rights, in some cases, were limited by the side in power. In this lesson, students will examine how tensions escalated and discuss what can be done to prevent violence.

Fort Scott was the base for one of the most diverse assemblies of Union soldiers during the Civil War. Significant numbers of African Americans and American Indians were recruited in this area. This program provides opportunities for students to discover their stories through small group activities, critical thinking and discussion. The program time is 45 minutes including time for questions and answers.

During the Civil War, Fort Scott played a similar role as a supply depot that was critical to the survival and success of Union soldiers in the area.

During the program, students volunteers discuss symptoms, diagnose illnesses, and determine treatments. The Civil War Medical program can be presented any time of year, except during Life on the Frontier programs and special events, providing that staffing is available. Program time runs from fifteen to forty-five minutes. This version is designed for middle school level.
