In Hawaiian mythology, the demigod Māui loved the forest birds and painted them bright colors for all to see and enjoy. The native Hawaiians loved to use the feathers of these forest birds to create lei kāmoe (feathered lei), mahiole (feathered helmets), kāhili (feathered standards), and ʻahu ʻula (feathered cloaks). These birds’ populations have been steadily declining since European settlers came in the 19th century bringing non-native plants and animals.

Tule Springs Expedition Research Learning Center partners with our local Audubon Society Chapter to participate in the Climate Watch bird survey citizen science project. Citizen scientists across North America report the data they collected during these surveys to help document how bird species are responding to climate change and shifting their ranges. Our "Wildlife" unit contains various lesson plans, each taking 20 minutes to an hour to complete, and targeted mainly at 4th-6th grade students. A class needn't complete every lesson in the unit, though some lessons do refer to one another and are better done in sequence. Each lesson comes with its own set of objectives and resources as well as suggestions for related activities.

The main purpose of this activity is for students to generalize that animals need a home. Homes are not just houses. A house may be considered shelter. People build houses, apartments, trailers, houseboats, and other kinds of shelter in which to live. Animals also need some kind of shelter. The shelter might be underground, in a bush, in the bark of a tree, or under some rocks.
