Essential Question

Why was President Eisenhower know for his good character?

Objective

Children will demonstrate that they will try to be a person of good character by creating a poster and/or by writing a letter to the Park Rangers to be displayed at the Eisenhower National Historic Site. The letters will review what they learned about the President and tell how they will try hard to imitate those characteristics. The poster would illustrate the class doing things during their lives that will help them be persons of character.

Background

THE SITE VISIT: The ranger will lead the students through a two-hour visit at the Eisenhower National Historic Site. The different hats Eisenhower wore throughout his life serve as a vehicle for exploring the character and leadership skills he developed because of his life experiences.

POST VISIT: The children will demonstrate that they will be a person of good character by creating a poster, and/or by writing a letter to the rangers, or by being awarded the Ike Award for Good Character.

Children who display good character traits during the school year will be selected by their peers or teacher to receive the Eisenhower Award for Good Character. The award certificate is included in this packet to be copied for use by the teacher. A list of students that receive the award can be forwarded to the Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg to be displayed in a prominent place.

Procedure

1. The teacher will review the field trip experience with the class and list on a chart (Knew - Learned) some things they knew about the President and some things they learned while at the farm.

2. Children will then be given time to create a class poster or write a letter explaining how they will try to imitate the good character of President Eisenhower.

3. When the letters or poster is complete it will be mailed or delivered to the farm to be put on display in a prominent place for other visitors to see.
