    The National Park Service seeks information about recent damage to a historic salt tram tower in Saline Valley. It appears the 113-year-old tower was pulled over while a person used a winch to extract their vehicle out of deep mud. The damage happened sometime between April 1 and April 24, 2024.

    The National Park Service is planning for the remediation of contaminated mine drainage sites throughout Big South Fork NRRA, and releasing a contaminated mine drainage mitigation and treatment, programmatic, and site specific Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS).

    Completion of Blue Heron Mine Spoil Remediation Project

    The National Park Service and the US Army Corps of Engineers have completed an extensive contaminated mine drainage remediation project in the Blue Heron area of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area earlier this year.

    Contaminated Mine Drainage

    The National Park Service is announcing the start of a contaminated mine drainage remediation project scheduled to begin January 6, 2017. To ensure visitor safety and resource protection, temporary trail closures in the Blue Heron area of the Big South Fork will start in January and be in place until approximately April 2017.

    Big South Fork NRRA contains over 100 abandoned mine openings which are part of historic coal operations. Abandoned mines produced waste rock, open portals and, in some cases, contaminated mine drainage, which are human safety and environmental hazards. Some sites contain unique cultural and natural resources.

    The National Park Service in cooperation with the Army Corps of Engineers has developed an Environmental Assessment for the Remediation of Selected Contaminated Mine Drainage Sites in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in McCreary County, Kentucky. The public comment period begins on Monday, June 20 and will continue through Wednesday, July 20, 2016.
