    The National Park Service will invest $195 million in Inflation Reduction Act funding to restore and build resilience in the lands and waters that serve as important wildlife and native plant habitats, spaces for recreation and reflection, and memorials to our nation’s history.

    The National Park Service (NPS) awarded $2,367,633.17 in Chesapeake Gateways Grants through the NPS Chesapeake Gateways Office in September to fund 22 projects. Governmental and non-governmental organizations spearhead the projects funded by Chesapeake Gateways grants to bring out familiar, untold, under-appreciated, or yet to be uncovered narratives and to promote resilient communities & landscapes through tourism, sustainability, conservation & local economies throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. These awards are made possible through annual appropriations from Congress.

    Today, the Department of the Interior announced over $44 million from the Biden-Harris administration’s Investing in America agenda to meet critical ecosystem resilience, restoration and environmental planning needs for the National Park Service in fiscal year 2023. These investments from the Inflation Reduction Act will be guided by the Department’s Restoration and Resilience Framework to support coordination across agency programs and ensure collaborative, strategic and measurable landscape-scale benefits that advance climate resilience. This announcement continues to deliver on President Biden’s historic conservation agenda and investments to build community resilience.

    Explore the natural world during the annual City Nature Challenge! Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site and the Saugus River Watershed Council will host a special event on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Saugus Iron Works.

    Pea Ridge National Military Park will conduct prescribed fire operations starting the week of March 19th, subject to weather conditions meeting prescriptions. To assure visitor safety, some areas inside the park, including roads and trails, may be closed while fire operations are taking place and for a short period after completion.

    Catoctin Mountain Park, Antietam and Monocacy national battlefields, Manassas National Battlefield Park, and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and Harpers Ferry national historical parks will conduct deer management operations in 2023 to protect and restore native plants, promote healthy and diverse forests, and preserve historic landscapes. Operations will take place from Jan. 30 to April 30, 2023.

    The latest effort to combat beech bark disease is underway at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore). Seven tree saplings made from cuttings taken from resistant American beech trees at the National Lakeshore were grafted and planted in early November 2022. The successful project came as a result of five years of planning and research in partnership with researchers at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech).
