BAKER, Nev. – Lightning from a series of strong thunderstorms which passed over Great Basin National Park on the afternoon of July 17 ignited at least two wildfires within the park’s boundaries.

Lower Lehman Creek Campground will be impacted by prescribed burns on the nearby Lehman Flats. Smoke will likely be visible through the weekend.

National Park Service firefighters are preparing to burn 30 acres of piles in the Lehman Flats area of Great Basin National Park. The piles, located along the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive near Lower Lehman Campground, are the result of aggressive efforts by park managers to reduce hazardous vegetation (known as fuels) and the risk of catastrophic wildfire.

The National Park Service (NPS) announces the availability of the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Fire Management Plan Environmental Assessment at Great Basin National Park. The public comment period for the EA was from February 2 to March 4, 2023. Alternative 2, Updated Fire Management Plan, was selected.
