Barber Asphalt Company, Tank Car

Tank Car. BAX markings for Barber Asphalt Company, Philadelphia, PA.
Built about 1911 by the German American Car Company (later the General American Tank Car Co.). 8000 gallons, riveted tank, single dome. Removed from interchange service not later than mid-1941 as the privately owned tank car has arch bar trucks that were banned after that date. Donated to Steamtown NHS February 1991 by Scranton construction and engineering firm, H. B. Sproul.

Boxcar No. 09760. Class: XM. PRR Class: X26c. Series: 104260-107759. Built September 1919 as No. 86842 in the series 86798-86900. Part of a group of wood boxcars rebuilt into exterior steel cars in the Pennsylvania Railroad Shops, 1945-1950. Rebuilt by Morrison Railway Supply about 1964 and purchased from that company by the Vermont Railway, renumbered to VTR No. 526. Acquired by Nelson Blount. The original number of 86842 was located on the center sill but the number concurrent with the X26c rebuild is unknown. Hence, 109760 is a fictitious number created by Steamtown when the boxcar was repainted to its 1940 configuration. The created number is made from the last number in the series plus one. Painted and lettered to PRR usage in 1993 and repainted in 1999.

Boxcar No. 105808 Class: XM. PRR Class X26c. Series: 104260-107759. Built as a wooden boxcar December 1919; original number not known. Part of a group of wood boxcars rebuilt into exterior steel cars in the Pennsylvania Railroad Shops, 1945-1950. After the rebuild, given the number 105808. Standard 40-foot boxcar. Rebuilt a second time by Morrison Railway Supply about 1964 and purchased from that company by the Vermont Railway, renumbered to VTR No. 503. Acquired by Nelson Blount when the Vermont Railway purchased larger boxcars. Painted and lettered to PRR usage in 1991 and repainted in 1999.

Original Lehigh Valley number unknown, part of Series 3285033699. Class: LG. Built by Bethlehem Steel between 1950 and 1952. Sold to Marshall Railway Equipment Company about 1958; which rebuilt and leased the gondola to New Jersey Zinc Company as MREX 7005. Donated to Steamtown Foundation in 1986.

Boxcar No. 43651. Class: XM. Built 1922. Series 43500-43999. Once common 40-ton, wood boxcar. Acquired by Norton Abrasive Company by late 1950s. To Railroad Museum of New England 1980 or 1981. As part of an equipment exchange, Steamtown NHS acquired the car in 1993, with delivery in 1995, from the Railroad Museum of New England. Restored by Steamtown NHS in 1999.

Baggage-Express-Messenger Car, No. 2067. Class: BE then BEM. Builder: American Car and Foundry, Berwick, 1926. Series: 2065-2099. By 1943 assigned to the series 2065 – 2109. Part of the 1960 Erie and Lackawanna merger. Erie-Lackawanna No. 251 in l965 and the five-pointed messenger star was added under the number. Interior altered with locker, grab bars, toilet facilities for the messenger. Became part of Steamtown Foundation 1985 - 1986.

Postal Storage Car, No. 2054. Class: BX then MR. Builder: Pressed Steel Car Company, 1925. Series: 2000-2109 then Series 2035-2064. An all steel car, originally carried express shipments on passenger trains. Later assigned as a postal storage car carrying bulk mail. In 1965 the Erie Lackawanna repainted and renumbered the car to No. 457. About 1969-1970 reduced to maintenance of way service and renumbered to No. 489011; same number used by Conrail after the 1976 take over. Steamtown Foundation purchased car from Conrail in 1987.

Railway Post Office (RPO) Car, No. 1100 Builder: American Car and Foundary Company, 1914.

First of five all-steel, 6-wheel truck RPO cars, series 1100-1104 purchased by the L&N. Acquired by Steamtown Foundation 1977. Intact interior includes folding sorting, tables and pigeon holes labeled for the last run. Restored in 1999 by Steamtown NH, and on exhibit in the History Museum.
