The History Museum

Explore exhibits which focus on the history of steam railroading in the region. The timeline begins with early transportation, canals, and gravity railroads. It continues into the 1960s and ends at 1995. The people gallery highlights groups of people whose lives influenced or were influenced by the railroad. Adjacent to the History Museum is an exhibit area with a Railroad Post Office car, an Erie Railroad Business Car, and an archeology exhibit.

1902/1937 Roundhouse

Explore thirteen bays of the original Delaware, Lackawanna and Western roundhouse. Built in 1902 and expanded in 1937, this structure is maintained as a working roundhouse to this day. Today, it is used for both displaying and maintaining our collection of historic locomotives.

Locomotive Machine Shop

The locomotive machine shop was originally built in 1865 as the heavy locomotive shop for the DL&W. Over the years it was expanded and modified many times, becoming a diesel-electric shop by the 1950s. It was abandoned by Conrail with the rest of the complex in 1981. Today, it has been restored and is used for all of our maintenance and restorations using equipment original to the 1940s and 50s. The shop is accessible to visitors via guided Ranger tours.

Oil House/ Bookstore

Built in 1911, the appropriately names oil house was used to store lubricating oils and other flammable substances used in the roundhouse. The idea was to keep these substances in a central location, outside of the roundhouse, so that in the event of a fire there would be minimal damage. Today the oil house has been refurbished and houses both a historic exhibit and Steamtown's "America's National Parks" Bookstore.
