LURAY, VA – Shenandoah National Park rangers responded to 142 calls for service between July and September 2024. Calls for service are incidents that require a law enforcement response from dispatch.Park rangers conducted 119 traffic stops along the 105-mile Skyline Drive. The majority of traffic stops were for speeding violations. The posted speed limit on Skyline Drive is 35 miles per hour or slower in developed areas. The second most common reason was for seatbelt violations.
“These numbers reflect the hard work and dedication of Shenandoah’s rangers to keep the public and park employees safe,” said Chief Ranger Cynthia Sirk-Fear. “Drivers are reminded to observe posted speed limits and for all occupants to wear a seatbelt.”
Additionally, park rangers responded to 18 search and rescue requests and 23 medical events. While most medical events involved basic medical care, three resulted in fatalities.
Law enforcement rangers receive extensive training, including Emergency Medical Service and Search and Rescue certifications, to address a variety of safety concerns. Read the Ranger Activity Report for details on incidents that occurred between July and September of this year.
