The Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots are one of two National Park Service-based hotshot crews in the United States. Established in 1981, this twenty-person hand crew represents the highest and most demanding standards of wildland firefighting and training.
Interagency hotshot crews are trained to fight the most challenging fires, often in remote, unforgiving terrain, with little logistical support. They also respond to non-fire incidents, such as hurricanes or earthquakes. Based at Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park, the Arrowhead Hotshots also work with the parks’ other crews on projects such as prescribed burning and defensible space.
The primary mission of the Arrowhead Hotshots is respond to wildland fire operations while maintaining the highest level of safety, professionalism, and productivity. The crew accomplishes this mission in accordance with values of teamwork, safety, and pride in the crew and the work. Arrowhead Hotshots are expected to take responsibility for the safety of every firefighter, always be aware of their situation, and never to compromise their own safety.
