Gering, NE— Join Noelle Grunwald, the Nebraska Environmental Educator with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, on Saturday, February 17th from 10:00-11:00 am in the Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center to learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and how you can participate in this free and fun global event. After the short indoor program, join Grunwald for an easy birding walk to observe winter birds around the visitor center.

Nebraska is home to an abundance of diverse wildlife and habitats with over 450 different species of birds calling our state home throughout the year. No matter where you live or travel and no matter the season there are always birds to be seen and enjoyed. “The Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way for people of all ages and abilities to connect with birds, nature and each other,” says Noelle Grunwald. “Last year more than a half-million people participated during the GBBC. They reported more than 7,500 species of birds from over 200 countries. The observations made during the GBBC help scientists better understand global bird populations and the best part is that anyone and everyone can participate – even if you are new to birds and birding! I really hope people will join me in celebrating our western Nebraska winter birds.”

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada and is made possible in part by founding sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited. Information about the Great Backyard Bird Count can be found at https://www.birdcount.org/.
