Throughout 2013 several scientists from the Joint Institute for Caribbean Marine Studies (JICMS) partner institutions examined the phenomenon in the Mangrove Lagoon/Bioluminescent Bay in the east portion of Salt River Bay. A series of water and sediment samples taken throughout the year allowed us to identify the organism(s) responsible for the bioluminescence and describe their ecology.

For the safety of our guests and to protect park resources, all National Parks on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands are closed ahead of Tropical Storm Ernesto. For the safety of our guests and to protect park resources, Buck Island Reef is closed due to Tropical Storm Ernesto. Christiansted National Historic Site Seeks Young Adults over the age of 18 to serve as the work leader for the Youth Conservation Corps members.  The least terns have returned to Buck Island Reef NM. A group of about 20 adults arrived and is establishing their nesting colony on the southeastern end of West Beach. To ensure protection for the colony, eggs, and chicks the National Park Service (NPS) is placing a temporary partial closure of the southeastern section of beach from the sand spur point to the pier (South). The area is marked with signs, ropes/stakes, and warning tape. The National Park Service is looking for applicants to apply for the Summer 2022 program. We request all application and essays are submitted and turned in by May 27, 2022. Please follow all site application links listed in this handout.
