In the Collection Spotlight, we will focus on some of the smaller treasures in our collection. We have the opportunity to examine objects that are either too fragile to display or are on display but worthy of more examination. Through photography and presentation of research, our museum staff and interns provide an in-depth exploration of these items.

Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site
Full Grooved Axes

A grooved axe is a large stone tool, one end typically tapered, with a groove around the midsection where a split wooden handle would have been attached or hafted to the stone using animal sinew. Full grooved axes have an indentation that goes completely around the circumference of the tool.

Firebacks

Two of the most impressive pieces of iron work in our collections are two firebacks that were made at Saugus Iron Works in the 17th century. Firebacks, also called “iron backs” or “cast backs” in the 17th century, were designed to sit against the back of a fireplace and protect the bricks from the direct heat of the fire. They would also reflect some of the heat back into the room.
