Visiting Sagamore Hill

There is no fee or cost to visit the grounds, explore the Old Orchard Museum, or park a vehicle at Sagamore Hill.

  • Park grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
  • You may walk through the grounds, including the nature trail, beach, pathways and picnic area.
  • Our Visitor Center is located in the Old Orchard Museum and is open Thursday - Sunday from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

  • Access to the Theodore Roosevelt Home is by guided tour only. Tickets are not sold in-person, and must be purchased online through recreation.gov. Read our guide to Touring the Roosevelt Home for more information and to purchase tickets.
Note: Handicapped parking is available. There are paths that are wheelchair accessible, leading into the Old Orchard Museum as well as the back porch of the Theodore Roosevelt home.

Purchase an America the Beautiful Pass at Sagamore Hill

Passes are available for sale Thursday - Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Old Orchard Museum Visitor Center with credit or debit card only. This park does not accept cash. You also have the option of purchasing your passes online.

Special events and outdoor programs

Special events and outdoor programs will take place on occasion during the spring, summer, and fall seasons, subject to weather and staffing levels. Check our calendar page or speak to a ranger or volunteer upon your arrival for more information.

Take a Tour of the Roosevelt Home

 

The Roosevelt Home can be viewed by guided tour only. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance on Recreation.gov. See our guide to Touring the Roosevelt Home for more information.

Self-guided Experiences


Each of these activities take 30-45 minutes.

If you are interested in nature:
  1. Walk the nature trail on the east side of the property. When arriving, park at the far end of the parking lot and walk towards the Old Orchard Museum (red brick house). The trail starts to the right of the museum. It is a three quarter of a mile unpaved loop. It is a moderate hike with inclines.
  2. Check out the Carriage Path on the west side of the property. Walk from the parking lot up to the Theodore Roosevelt House (gray and red Queen Anne). Continue up the path towards the windmill. To stay on the Carriage Path continue straight passing the house to your right. It will loop you to the tennis courts and up to the pet cemetery. It is about one mile, paved, but with inclines.
If you are interested in history:
  1. Walk the grounds with the Sagamore Hill audio tour guiding you. This self-guided tour can be accessed by downloading the NPS app for iOS and Android devices. Search for "Sagamore Hill" within the app and look for "Self-Guided Tours." Waysides located around the park will offer additional information about the cultural landscape of Sagamore Hill.
  2. Use your mobile device to take a virtual tour of the Theodore Roosevelt House. Go to Google Arts and Cultures tour of Sagamore Hill. Note: This website uses large amounts of data.
If you are interested in recreation:
  1. A picnic area is available near the farm buildings directly off the parking lot. It is uncovered with a few trees for shade. Remember to pack it in, pack it out.
  2. Benches are located throughout the property including by the Theodore Roosevelt House and along the Nature Trail.
  3. There are several paved and unpaved walking paths on site. See our park map.

Downtown Oyster Bay

Sagamore Hill NHS is located three miles from downtown Oyster Bay which is home to a variety of attractions including town parks, beaches, museums, and restaurants.

Directions/Parking for Downtown Oyster Bay

The parking lot of Sagamore Hill will lead you to Sagamore Hill Road. Follow Sagamore Hill Road to the end and make a left on Cove Neck Road. At the end of Cove Neck Road, make a right onto Cove Road. Cove Road becomes East Main Street as you enter Oyster Bay. At the traffic light the cross street is South Street (Rt. 106), and straight ahead East Main Street becomes Audrey Avenue. Street parking and municipal parking lots are available.

There are several restaurants nearby (e.g., on Main Street, Audrey Avenue, and Spring Street). Call before arriving to check times and see if reservations are needed.

Audio Tour

Sagamore Hill offers a self-guided audio tour of the grounds that can be accessed by downloading the NPS app for iOS and Android devices. Search for "Sagamore Hill" within the app and look for "Self-Guided Tours."

The tour is typically taken while visiting the site but can be accessed from anywhere. There are 8 stops that include in-depth audio description and photos.

Transportation

By Train:
The Long Island Railroad provides direct access to Midtown Manhattan or Eastern Long Island. The Oyster Bay train station is located three miles from Sagamore Hill, and the Syosset train station is located six miles from the site. While the Oyster Bay station is closer to Sagamore Hill, trains at the Syosset station run more frequently to and from New York City. Taxis and driving services such as Uber and Lyft are typically available to and from the station.

Directions by Car:
  • Directions to Sagamore Hill
    • Take either the Northern State Parkway to Exit 35N or the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to Exit 41N
    • From there, follow Route 106 North for 6 miles into downtown Oyster Bay
    • Turn right onto East Main Street and travel 2 miles.
    • Turn left onto Cove Neck Road and drive 1.5 miles to Sagamore Hill.
  • Directions from Sagamore Hill to Long Island Expressway (Rt. 495) and Northern Parkway Westbound
    • Drive down the hill to the stop sign.
    • Turn left onto Cove Neck Road (no street sign).
    • Pass Oyster Bay Harbor on the right.
    • At the stop sign turn Left onto Cove Road.
    • Take Cove Road until it ends at a traffic light.
    • Turn right onto Rt. 25A (Northern Blvd). Go about two miles, straight through two traffic lights.
    • At the third traffic light turn left into Rt. 106 South (Oyster Bay Road).
    • Go about six miles on 106, bearing left at the fork where Rt. 25 and Rt. 107 split off.
    • Enter the town of Jericho, passing a shopping center on the left. Get into the right lane. After you pass the Jericho Fire Department on the right watch for signs for Rt. 495 and Northern Parkway. All entrance ramps are to the right.
  • Directions from Sagamore Hill to Long Island Expressway (Rt. 495) and Northern Parkway Eastbound
    • Drive down the hill to the stop sign.
    • Turn left onto Cove Neck Road (no street sign).
    • Pass Oyster Bay Harbor on the right.
    • At the stop sign turn Left onto Cove Road.
    • Take Cove Road until it ends at a traffic light.
    • Turn left onto Rt.25A (Northern Boulevard).
    • Drive up the hill, and at the traffic light make a right onto Cold Spring Road.
    • Make a left onto South Woods Road. Stay straight and cross Jericho Turnpike (Rt. 25). Road name changes to Piquets Road. At traffic light, make right onto Woodbury Road. Follow highway signs and turn left onto Sunnyside Boulevard. Entrances to highways ahead.
