Size: 5.5-7”
Description: Mostly black overall with a large white spot on the back, white checkering along the wings and several white stripes on the head. They have a short, black beak and males have a red patch on the back of the head.
Migratory Status: Year-round residents of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Habitat: Breed in aspen forests, but also live in a variety of coniferous forests to 9,000 feet and rarely 11,000 feet.
Diet: Eat mostly insects but also eat berries, nuts and grains.
