Fountains in Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park administers four fountains in Washington DC--at Georgetown Waterfront Park, Meridian Hill Park, Chevy Chase Circle, and at the Kahlil Gibran Memorial. These fountains are turned off in the winter to prevent damage and are usually turned on in the spring or summer depending on temperatures and maintenance status.

Georgetown Waterfront Park Splash Fountain

The Georgetown Waterfront Park fountain was turned on for the 2024 season.

 

Meridian Hill Cascade

Parts required to make repairs to the nearly 100-year-old fountain are not readily available. We are searching for solutions and coming up with a plan to turn the water on.

 

Chevy Chase Circle Fountain is on.

The Chevy Chase Circle fountain underwent rehabilitation work in the summer of 2022. The fountain is a prominent architectural feature of Chevy Chase Circle, which serves as a gateway to the Washington, DC from Montgomery County, Maryland along Connecticut Avenue. Built in 1932, the fountain was leaking due to weak and failing mortar joints. Additionally, the waterproofing had deteriorated and needed to be replaced. The project involved: cleaning and conservation of the fountain stone masonry; masonry joint repointing; and removal, protection, repair and reinstallation of historic materials, including the fountain coping stones. The project also included partial removal and replacement of the basin structural slab, waterproofing system replacement, removal and replacement of all fittings, and replacement of equipment within the utility vault. Additionally, new submersible lighting was added to the fountain basin as part of this project.

The fountain was turned on (and illuminated) at the beginning of June 2023.

 

Kahlil Gibran Fountain Status

A major waterline failure will prevent the fountains at the Kahlil Gibran memorial from being turned on at this time.
