The Prince of Emancipation Field Trip

Program Overview

Students will learn about the life of Prince Rivers, a notable military and political figure during Reconstruction. The field trip will start at the location of Pinckney-Porter's Chapel where students will be introduced to historic space that they are in. Ranger(s) will lead students to Fort Frederick and talk about the importance of Black military in the Beaufort Sea islands while focusing on an individual soldier named Prince Rivers. The activity will allow students to work together in teams in order to create their own county, which includes assigning roles to one another and establishing laws. Interested groups cannot exceed 50 participants. There should be a chaperone ratio of one chaperone per 24 students.

Curriculum Standards

The Prince of Emancipation field trip at Camp Saxton will reinforce the following topics with your students:

  • Identification and evaluation of economic, political, and social changes experienced throughout the Civil War
  • Explanation of how emancipation was received as a result of civic participation
  • Identify and evaluate the impact of economic, political, and social events on the African American experience throughout Reconstruction

Field Trip Location

Pinckney Porter’s Chapel, Port Royal, SC
The program will begin at Pinckney-Porter's Chapel and continue at Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve: 601 Old Fort Road, Port Royal, South Carolina

Bus Parking

If your school group is traveling by bus, buses can unload and park at Pinckney-Porter's Chapel. Please note that buses are not allowed at Fort Frederick due to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources regulations.

Other Resources

The Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve is the publicly accessible site of Camp Saxton, but is not managed by the National Park Service. The site is jointly managed by the Beaufort County Passive Parks program and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
