VAN BUREN, Mo - Holidays in the Ozarks are a special time for fellowship while enjoying the peace of winter along the riverways. Take part in the upcoming holiday events during the month of December.

Saturday, December 7: Viewing the Moon and Jupiter at Big Spring

Brisk, starry nights are perfect for viewing the winter sky. Join us at Big Spring on December 7 at 7 pm for a stargazing event featuring the moon and the planet Jupiter! The moon will be nearing first quarter, a good time to view mountains and craters along the edge of lunar day and night. Jupiter is expected to have excellent visibility. Though it's still early, we may see some meteors from the Geminid meteor shower.

Clear skies are forecast but if clouds obstruct stargazing, we will present an alternate program on bats and dark skies at the Big Spring picnic pavilion. Dress for cold weather and bring lawn chairs. A thermos of hot chocolate and a warm blanket would be the perfect finishing touch for a night under the stars.

Big Spring is located 3 miles south of Van Buren on State Highway 103.

Saturday, December 14: Ozark Christmas at Alley Mill

Experience Alley Mill decked in Christmas spirit and holiday cheer! Join us on December 14 from 6 to 7:30 pm for carols and refreshments by candlelight. Holiday treats and hot drinks will be provided by the Ozark Riverways Foundation.

Alley Spring is located 5 miles west of Eminence on State Highway 106.

Sunday, December 15: Christmas Celebration at Mt. Zion Church

Visit the old country church on December 15 at 2 pm to share holiday stories from the Akers community, a Christmas message, and caroling. Enjoy holiday refreshments provided by our partners. The event will be hosted jointly with the Ozark Riverways Foundation, Friends of Mt. Zion, Dent County Historical Society, Ozark Heritage Project, and Shannon County Museum Association.

Mt. Zion is located ½-mile north of Akers on State Highway K.
