The Sinking of the SMS Cormoran and the First US Shots of World War I

On December 13, 1914, the German auxiliary cruiser SMS Cormoran, out of fuel and cut off from Germany by World War I, took refuge from Japanese warships in Guam. The ship spent the next two years interned in Apra Harbor. When the United States declared war on Germany in 1917, the Cormoran's captain blew up the ship rather than let her fall into enemy hands.

Humpback Rocks Trailhead

The short, strenuous climb to enjoy the view from the Humpback Rocks has drawn hikers for hundreds of years, across all seasons. There is much to see and do in the area beyond the hike to ‘the Rocks’ including access to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Glass Hollow Overlook, Old Howardsville Turnpike, Jack Albright Loop over Dobie Mountain, and true summit of Humpback Mountain. Along the way keep a sharp eye out for cultural resources and wildlife.

John Small freed himself, his wife Susan, and their infant son Phillip during a dangerous escape aboard the Confederate steamer, Planter. As the ship’s engineer, John was instrumental in the success of the mission in which he and pilot Robert Smalls brought a total of sixteen men, women and children out of slavery and into freedom.

Located west of Bright Angel Lodge, at the start of Hermit Road and beside a canyon overlook, this shuttle stop is just a few steps west of the Village (Blue) Route shuttle stop for the Hermit Road Interchange and Bright Angel Trailhead (at the top of the hill on your right. Hermit Road is a scenic 7-mile (11 km) road out to Hermits Rest, and the Hermit Trail. Along the way, there are 9 outstanding viewpoints, each with a designated bus stop.

Although there is not a view of Grand Canyon directly from this shuttle stop itself, a short walk from here, through the forest and along the easy, paved path is rewarded with a spectacular, open, panoramic viewpoint which extends far out from the canyon rim.
