Before Shirley Graham married W.E.B. Du Bois in 1951, she had earned a national reputation as a playwright, composer, conductor, director, and author. Born to a A.M.E. minister and a European mother, Graham was raised to appreciate Black culture and music. From a young age, her parents instilled in her the importance of social justice and the uplift of the Black Community. For her lifelong dedication, we honor her as an ancestor.

Enjoy spectacular views of Glen Lake, undulating sand dunes, and breathtaking views of the grandest of all dunes, with shimmering Lake Michigan as the backdrop. Stopping at all twelve points on the 7.4-mile Scenic Drive will take about two hours.

Dune Climb

It's the most famous attraction at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and a Midwest rite of summer, loads of fun for the young and young at heart: a 284-foot-high wall of glistening white sand that tourists climb for fun-the Dune Climb. Climbing this dune takes at least 10 minutes and is a strenuous hike that will fill your shoes and pockets with sand, and take your breath away. If you get to the top of the first dune you will have a good view of Little Glen Lake.
Sleeping Bear Dune Overlook- Stop #10

Located approximately 600 ft from the Lake Michigan Overlook Deck through sand, you will arrive to another viewing platform. The Sleeping Bear Dune is the large dune, along the edge of the bluff covered in dark green vegetation. From where you stand, it is about 1 mile away from this overlook. For 43 careful years she watched the rough frontier city blossom to a Duneland metropolis; she fearlessly maintained the harbor beacon as lighthouse keeper while enduring the ensuing hardships with her lifelong companion Ann Hartwell.
