Essex County Museum & Historical Society

The Essex County Museum tells the story of the Rappahannock River and Essex County’s rich history. Explore exhibits on early American exploration, the Revolutionary War, local river traditions, and the Pirates of the Chesapeake. See a scale model of Fort Lowry, boat models, and a 16-foot pictorial map of the river. Visitors can also enjoy the charming courtyard with a NASA Moon Tree and find unique artifacts from the steamboat era.

Following the burning of Washington D.C., British forces came to Baltimore, the third largest city in the United States. American forces, fighting against the great military force in the world at the time, held their ground. The epic event inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words that would become the U.S. national anthem.

William Jones joined the Continental Army at the outset of the American Revolution. He was stationed at the American Fort Schuyler/Stanwix during the Siege of 1777 and saw combat at the 1779 Battle of New Town. Despite having served well for three years, Jones eventually left the new United States for Canada, never returning to the original nation he sided with.

It’s officially that time of year when the young coho, chinook, and steelhead have started emerging from their gravel nests (redds) in the streams monitored by the San Francisco Bay Area Network in Marin County, California. We’ve seen some of these little fry doing well during special winter surveys in Muir Woods National Monument. Hopefully, our summer surveys will show high survival despite challenges like big winter storms.

This non-profit history museum features interpretive panels and maps that tell the story of over 3000 North Carolina Cherokee prisoners in several detachments who camped and walked through Tellico Plains on the first leg of their journey to live in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Visitors can view display cabinets of stone and clay tools and relics the local Overhill Cherokee used for farming, cooking, hunting, weapons and games.

Backcountry Information Center

The Backcountry Info Center is open daily from 8 am–noon; and 1 pm–5 pm, and provides information, permits, and trip planning assistance about day and overnight hikes into the canyon. The building is located in the village by Parking Lot D, and across the railroad tracks from Maswik Lodge. Park in Lot D, then take the free, early morning Hikers' Express bus from Backcountry Info Center to South Kaibab Trailhead.

Jim Beckwourth, the African-American mountain man, scion of British nobility, great medicine and warrior chief in the Crow Indian Nation, US Army scout and courier, and discoverer of Beckwourth Pass and trail, settled here on his road for 7 years. He created several things we still have: Beckwourth Pass and Trail, located by Trails West markers, this cabin, and a national best seller biography, The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, 1856.

Katie Shepard Hotel

This large, one-and-a-half-story, shingle-style house was constructed in 1895 or 1896 for Mrs. William Shepard and her daughter Katherine, who was popularly known on the island as "Miss Katie." The house was allegedly designed in the style of the Shepards' residence in New Orleans. A detached kitchen and dining room was located behind the house. After the Cottage Row dining room closed around 1900, Katie Shepard converted her cottage into a summer hotel.
