Before Shirley Graham married W.E.B. Du Bois in 1951, she had earned a national reputation as a playwright, composer, conductor, director, and author. Born to a A.M.E. minister and a European mother, Graham was raised to appreciate Black culture and music. From a young age, her parents instilled in her the importance of social justice and the uplift of the Black Community. For her lifelong dedication, we honor her as an ancestor.

Jasper Clarence McCartney
- Type: Person
Jasper McCartney spent most of his life at sea, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1930 at age 20. In the 1930s, he served on three destroyers, including the USS West Virginia where he worked as a fireman and watertender. In 1940, McCartney joined the crew of the USS Arkansas and was promoted to chief watertender. He was assigned to the USS Cassin Young a few days after its commissioning in December, 1943. McCartney was killed in action during a kamikaze attack on the destroyer.

David Stewart Johnson

Born March 17, 1921, David Stewart Johnson grew up in Newbury, Massachusetts. While attending Middlebury College, Johnson decided to enlist in the Navy. He trained to become a torpedoman and achieved a rating of torpedoman’s mate 1st class. In 1944 he joined the crew of the USS Cassin Young. On July 30, 1945, Johnson was at his battle station when a kamikaze crashed into the main deck below him. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Dr. Margaret "Mom" Chung

Dr. Margaret “Mom” Chung was the first Chinese American woman to become a physician. She founded one of the first Western medical clinics in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the 1920s. During World War II, she and her widespread network of “adopted sons,” most of them American soldiers, sailors, and airmen who called her “Mom,” became famous. Although she faced prejudice because of her race, gender, and sexuality, Dr. Chung forged a distinctive path throughout her life.

Harriet Colfax

Born along the St. Lawrence River, determined Harriet Colfax found herself far upstream along the treacherous coast of Southern Lake Michigan after moving to a young Michigan City in 1853. For 43 careful years she watched the rough frontier city blossom to a Duneland metropolis; she fearlessly maintained the harbor beacon as lighthouse keeper while enduring the ensuing hardships with her lifelong companion Ann Hartwell.

Ben Conn served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After attending specialized radar training in Hawaii, Conn joined the crew of the USS Cassin Young. He was killed in action while serving on the USS Cassin Young when kamikaze attacked the destroyer.
