This week we celebrate National Park Stories. Each day spotlights a different story and theme, an intangible way the National Park sites help us experience and appreciate our nation and our world.

  Today's theme is GRATITUDE. At Gateway Arch National Park, we offer gratitude to Dred and Harriet Scott. The Scott’s were enslaved people who lived in St. Louis in the years before the Civil War, when Missouri was a slave state.

  Today's theme is INGENUITY. At Gateway Arch National Park, we recognize the ingenuity of James Buchanan Eads. James B. Eads’ engineering advances gave St. Louis a rebirth as the gateway to the west and contributes to the commercial success of the United States.

  Today's theme is INSPIRATION. At Gateway Arch National Park, we honor the inspiring actions of Virginia Minor. The United States was founded on a promise of equality and civil rights for all its citizens. For many groups this promise was not fulfilled for many years.

  Today's theme is FUN. At Gateway Arch National Park, we recognize the founders of St. louis and how they found ways to have fun under harsh conditions. St. Louis was founded within the French colony of Louisiana in 1764.
