History

The Museum Branch of Independence National Park is the unit in charge of caring for the historic artifacts that support the Park‟s preservation and interpretive missions. The Museum Branch has its origins in Museum Operations, which was responsible for providing appropriate furnishings for the historic structures restored by the National Park Service during the 1950s. In 1995, Park Superintendent Martha Aikens combined the Museum Operations unit with the History and Historic Architecture division in order to form Cultural Resources Management, of which the Museum Branch is currently a part.

The artifacts under the Museum Branch‟s care date from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries and include books and manuscripts, decorative arts, architectural fragments, and archaeological artifacts excavated from within Park boundaries. Significant collections include manuscripts and printed materials related to the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, decorative arts and Americana that provide context for how people lived, and architectural fragments from historic structures.

The museum accession files for the park artifact collections are not described in this finding aid. These permanent records are available for research use upon request from Archives and Museum staff.

Series Descriptions

Series I: Administrative Files, 1949-2010, undated
This series is divided into four subseries: General Files, Monthly Reports, Museum Branch Internship Working Files, and Planning Files.
These files concern the Museum Branch as a whole, with particular emphasis on administrative and planning documents. They illustrate the upper level management of the Park‟s collections, document restoration work done on INDE‟s various historic sites, and describe various exhibitions held at the Park.

Subseries A: General Files, 1949-2010, undated
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
These files cover the breadth of Museum Branch activities. Significant groupings of material include files related to exhibits held at INDE over the years and information about the various historical sites contained in the Park (City Tavern, Deshler-Morris House, etc.). Also present are annual reports, documentation of Park concerns such as lighting fixtures, theft and vandalism; and details on INDE‟s archeological activities.
A significant amount of material concerns the restored carpet in Congress Hall. The majority of these files contain research done for the book The Most Splendid Carpet by Susan H. Anderson, published in 1978. They include photographs, photocopies of articles, and a copy of the manuscript.

Subseries B: Monthly Reports, 1961-1982
Files are arranged chronologically by year.
These files consist of the monthly reports for the Museum Branch. They contain reports from museum staff and notes on accessions, purchases, gifts, and loans.

Subseries C: Museum Branch Internship Working Files, 2009, undated
Files are arranged chronologically by the year the intern served and thereunder alphabetically.
This subseries contains the working files of the Museum Branch interns. This program differs from the FINHP Internship in that while the latter was a fully-funded annual curatorial program, the Museum Branch interns are often undergraduates and volunteers from the community who serve for a shorter period of time.

Subseries D: Planning Files, 1961-2007, undated
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
This subseries concerns the care and management of the museum as a whole and contains materials related to the 2001 Archival Collection Storage Plan, the 1983 American Association of Museums accreditation process, and the 1995 and 2006 Reaccreditation Self-Studies.

Series II: Supervisory Curator Working Files, 1948-2002, undated
The series is organized into four subseries: David Wallace, John C. Milley, Doris Fanelli, and Karie Diethorn.
The series is arranged chronologically by the years each curator served.
This series documents the activities of the supervisory curators at INDE.

Subseries A: David Wallace Working Files, 1951-1971, undated
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
This subseries concerns David Wallace‟s research on eighteenth-century libraries. This work was directly related to the restoration of the Todd House, and documents Wallace‟s attempts to approximate the materials that would be found in an eighteenth century Quaker lawyer‟s home.
These research files include copies of catalog records, correspondence, and two boxes of handwritten notecards on topics related to eighteenth-century law libraries.

Subseries B: John C. Milley Working Files, 1948-1990, undated
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
These files are from John C. Milley‟s tenure as the Supervisory Curator. Materials include correspondence, research notes related to INDE‟s portrait collection, information about the Sharples acquisition, a photocopy of the Samuel Neave inventory, and a significant amount of photographic material. The photographic material consists of slides illustrating topics such as decorative arts and portraiture, black and white photographs and photographic negatives by Alfred C. Prime, a binder box of 4x5 inch color negatives depicting INDE, and over 100 black and white photographs documenting historic structures and period furnishings.

Subseries C: Doris Fanelli Working Files, 1958-1975, 2001, undated
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
This series documents the projects Doris Fanelli worked on as the INDE Supervisory Curator, and also contains the files that were under her care. The largest group of material within the Fanelli subseries consists of files related to the Todd House, dating from 1933 to 1975. This grouping represents early attempts to develop a furnishing plan for the Todd House, and contains materials such as correspondence, photocopies of newspaper clippings, photographs, the Todd House floor and furnishing plans, and inventories. Notable staff members included in these files are curators David Wallace and John C. Milley, and former Superintendent Melford O. Anderson.
This subseries also includes a copy of the book History of the Portrait Collection: Independence National Historical Park (Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society, 2001), written by Fanelli in conjunction with Karie Diethorn; and four binders of photographs of the Second Bank portraits.

Subseries D: Karie Diethorn Working Files, 2001-2002
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
This subseries consists of photographic material documenting the second exhibit of the Magna Carta held at INDE in 2001. The exhibit was precipitated by renovations being undertaken at the National Archives building in Washington, DC.
Most of the photographs held in this subseries are 5x7 inch color prints showing the Magna Carta being prepared for display. Also included are six drawings of the case used to hold the Magna Carta, three compact discs, and several strips of 35mm photographic negatives.

Subseries B: Jane Kolter Working Files, 1974-1992, undated
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
This subseries documents the projects Jane Kolter worked on while serving as a Staff Curator at Independence National Park. Her role at INDE was the Curator of Exhibits, and as such she was responsible for developing a variety of exhibits throughout the park.
The most significant amount of material relates to City Tavern and Second Bank. The City Tavern materials include information on updated furnishings, menus, and concession reports. The Second Bank materials are primarily concerned with the various exhibits held in the building: including planning documents for the 1987 Bicentennial exhibit “Becoming a Nation: The Creation of the Constitution;” and planning documents, contract files, and exhibit labels for the Portrait Galleries that were updated in the 1980s. The Second Bank files also include upholstery samples from the building‟s curtains and draperies.
The Kolter files include exhibit and planning documents from the Poe House and the Artist in the Park program from 1975-1977. The records also have information on the Syng Inskstand and the Treasure of Independence book project.
