HistoryThe Morris family members who are represented in these papers are part of a large and prominent Philadelphia Quaker family descended from Anthony Morris (1654-1721) who emigrated to America by 1683. His great-grandson, Samuel Morris (1734-1812), who continued the family brewing business and ran a mercantile firm, is best known for his role in the American Revolution when he fought at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton as a captain in the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary ("read out of meeting" for his military activity, he continued to dress and speak as a Quaker). Samuel married into another notable Philadelphia family, the Wistars, and his sixth son, Luke Wistar (1768-1830), married Eliza Morris Buckley. The only child from their marriage, Samuel Buckley Morris I (1791-1859), was a successful merchant until the sudden death of his wife, the former Hannah Perot, in 1831 prompted him to retire from his business and devote his life to his three motherless children, Samuel Buckley (II), Beulah Sansom, and Elliston Perot. In 1835 he moved his family from downtown Philadelphia to his father-in-law's summer house in Germantown originally built for David Deshler and used by President Washington and his family in 1793 when escaping the yellow fever epidemic of the city and 1794. Thus the Morris family began their relationship with the residence later known as the Deshler-Morris House. Samuel Buckley educated his children at his house with other children and then sent the boys to the Westtown School, a Quaker boarding school, and Haverford College, two institutions which he supported. He founded the Savings Fund of Germantown with his own money and contributed to other good works. After Samuel Buckley I died in 1859, Beulah stayed in the House until her marriage to Charles Rhodes in 1870. Samuel Buckley II had earlier moved away to Olney to pursue farming: around 1864, he became a minister. Elliston Perot and his wife Martha Canby moved to the House around 1868 after they spent their first years of married life in a new house on Church Lane near Chew Avenue. Elliston and Martha raised four children in the House -- Marriott Canby I, Elizabeth Canby, Samuel Buckley III, and Elliston Perot II -- with Elliston Perot II dying of typhoid fever in 1881 and Samuel Buckley III perishing of an unknown disease in 1886. Elizabeth recorded in a diary entry that she would be glad to leave after Samuel's death as it was full of painful memories but her father "loved the old place so." Elliston and Martha indeed cherished the house and cultivated its historical associations. They sought out items that had been in the house during Washington's occupancy and decorated the main rooms and hallway with colonial-era furnishings. The appearance of the house's front facade was preserved, and the addition designed by Mantle Fielding and built in 1908-1909 was recessed so as not to detract from the main structure. Journalists were allowed to write about the historical interiors of the "Washington Residence," and the Morrises gave mounted photographs of the house as favors during the 1886 Perot family reunion. Elliston I left the House to his daughter with his wife retaining life interest, and Elizabeth Canby continued to live there after her father's and mother's deaths in 1914 and 1919 respectively. When she died in 1947, Marriott, her only surviving sibling, inherited the house. The 1948 codicil in his will leaving the House to be preserved by the U.S. government was invalid because he died less than thirty days after it was written. His family, however, honored his wish and the house was transferred to the National Park Service in 1949. The following short biographies continue the discussion of the major figures in the Morris Papers: Elliston Perot Morris I (22 May 1831- 1 November 1914) Morris was raised at the House and attended Westtown Boarding School, and Haverford College. He took care of his family's financial trusts and real estate holdings in a downtown Philadelphia office. As his father before him, he was prominent in Germantown civic organizations, serving on the board of the Savings Fund for sixty years, and was active in local Quaker institutions such as the Friends' Free Library and the Friends' Free School. He was a long-time member and president of the Friends' Freeman Association of Philadelphia and in this capacity corresponded with Booker T. Washington about Christianburg Institute, a school for African-Americans in Virginia. His personal interests included drawing in which he became a skilled amateur. He, like other successful businessmen, sought relief through summer vacations and travel. He bought property and built two houses, "Avocado" (named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda) and "Cedar Mer" at Sea Girt on New Jersey coast. He and his family traveled to Europe in 1892, to the Canadian Rockies in 1898, and to Bermuda in 1910. After his health weakened in 1914, he ceased visiting his office in Philadelphia but attended to his business affairs at home and went to Meetings. He died on 3 December of that year at the House. Martha Canby Morris (12 May 1836 – 1 November 1919) Martha Canby of Wilmington, Delaware, married Elliston in 1861; it is unclear how they met. Upon the death of Merrit Canby, her father, in 1866, she inherited money for which she kept an account. Martha ran the households at Church Lane, the House, and at Sea Girt and closely documented expenditures when given time between tending children and supervising servants. She, in midst of her duties, was able to develop hobbies. She pursued a strong interest in the genealogy of not only the Canby family but also the Morris family and collected documents from other family members. (Her claim to a Thomas Jefferson letter to William Canby (1746-1830) caused tension with Canby relations.) Probably inspired by her son Marriott, she took up photography and snapped family scenes. The Germantown Book Club, formed in 1870, was another other long-term interest. Like her husband, she died at the House. The Philadelphia Inquirer obituary (3 November 1919) noted her "particular pride in keeping the interior of her house as nearly as possible like it was in Colonial times, when the antique furniture, painting and bric-a-brac served as a background for General Washington…" Beulah Morris Rhoads (2 January 1829-1923) Beulah lived at the House from childhood until her marriage to Charles Rhoads in 1870. Their only child Mary died as an infant. She and her husband lived in Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Beulah recorded a memorable trip to Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1882 through her correspondence. Beulah researched the woman for whom she was named, her great-aunt Beulah Sansom, who was a minister active in African-American causes. In this time before photocopiers, she also commissioned copying of family documents. She died in Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1923. Marriott Canby Morris I (7 September 1863 - 2 March 1948) The eldest child of Elliston and Martha, he attended the same Quaker schools as his father had and worked with his father in his real estate business. After his 1885 Haverford graduation and before his 1897 marriage, he lived with his parents but travelled to Europe and Bermuda on his own. He and Jane, his wife, raised three children -- Elliston Perot III, Marriott Canby II, and Janet ("Jay") -- and lived in Germantown throughout their lives. Like his mother, he collected family documents including his grandfather Canby's almanac diaries. He continued his father's civic interests by serving in many organizations including the Germantown Savings Fund, the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company, the Friends' Freedmen Association, and the Germantown Friends School. Three major interests persisted throughout his life. Beginning in his student days at Haverford, he practiced photography and soon was making images used in college publications and was exhibiting in local photography shows. As he brought up a family of his own, he concentrated on recording their images. While at Haverford, he also began bicycle riding and became a faithful member of the League of American Wheelsmen, the Veteran Wheelmen's Association of Philadelphia, the Boston Bicycle Club, and the Hardly Able Club. He bicycled in his ninth decade. Marriott was heavily involved in the Germantown Boys' Club from its early days as the Boys' Parlor and in 1947 was given an award commemorating his sixty years of service from the National Association of Boys' Clubs. Jane Rhoads Morris (1 May 1870 - 24 May 1950) Jane grew up in the same Germantown social group as Marriott and attended the Germantown Friends' School. She was initially hesitant to wed Marriot, whom she regarded as a friend, but they became engaged late 1896 and married in June 1897. After an European honeymoon which involved bicycling, they returned briefly to her mother's home before moving into their own home in the Pelham neighborhood. They settled to 131 W. Walnut Lane around 1907. She had three children born between 1899 and 1907. Despite her domestic duties, she became involved in numerous social causes such the Mother's Peace Congress and American Friends Service Committee and was an early participant in Fellowship House, a local organization promoting racial harmony. After her death on 24 March 1950, her preparations to ready the House for transfer to the government were noted in memorials. Elizabeth Canby Morris (4 October 1866 – 13 December 1947) The only girl in the family, Elizabeth ("Bessie") graduated from the Germantown Friends School in 1885 and as a young woman took lessons in French, German, guitar, sketching, and china painting. From 1899 to 1890 she and female friends from Germantown traveled to the British Islands and in 1925 she returned to Europe with a female traveling companion. She served on the Board of Managers of the Germantown Employment Society for Women and supported other local organizations. She and her brother were the primary donors for the rebuilding of the Germantown Friends Meeting Library. Like her brother and mother, she enjoyed photography. She remained at the House after her parents' deaths, retaining the colonial-style furnishings. Elizabeth apparently suffered a stroke in December 1942 and was partially incapacitated until her death in 1947. Elliston Perot Morris III (17 May 1899-1980) Named after his grandfather, Elliston attended Westtown School and graduated from Haverford College in 1922. At the age of seven, he began photographing family scenes. He and his family enjoyed summers at "Dalibarda," a lodge at the Pocono Lake Preserve and at "Cedar Mer" at Sea Girt. As a young man, he went to France in 1919 and to Russia in 1923 as a volunteer for the American Friends Service Committee. Elliston also served as a camp director for the Germantown Boys' Club in 1922. He had forestry training and worked for the U.S. Forest Service and for the Tennessee Valley Authority. In 1943 he married Anna Sayler, and they had four children. During World War II, he was jailed as a conscientious objector. Elliston was the Morris family representative in the negotiations with the National Park Service, and he acted as the donor for the Morris Family Papers at Independence National Historical Park. He served on the Deshler-Morris House Committee after the transfer of the house, and he and his wife attended events at the House. After his death in 1980, his wife Anna continued to care for and to donate the family records to the park. Marriott Canby Morris II (29 December 1900 – 9 February 1992) Following in the family tradition, Marriott attended Westtown School and Haverford College. He helped in building operations at a Native American school in the summer of 1917 and in 1919 went to France as a American Friends Service Committee volunteer. He spent 1923 and 1924 in Russia. He became a professor of German at Beloit College. His renunciation of his inheritance from his father, based on his objection to inherited wealth, was reported in national newspapers. Marriott married Elizabeth ("Libby") Haines. Janet ("Jay") Morris Butler (7 April 1907- 28 August 2010) Janet attended Germantown Friends' School and Connecticut College. From letters sent to her parents in the 1940s, it may be deduced that she was living in Connecticut and New York City. DrawingsPhotographs/Images (the commercial and/or professional portraits of individuals) Personal Materials Professional Life Organizations Financial Records Property Records Legal Records Genealogical Research Estate Records Obituaries and Memorials Biographical Materials Collected Materials Provenance: Members of the Morris family, primarily Elliston Perot I and III, Martha Canby, and Marriott Canby I, created and collected these papers. They actively solicited documents from other family members and apparently received correspondence and other papers related to an individual after that individual's death which they subsequently incorporated into the records. Items deemed as special such as travel correspondence, family photographs, early recipes, and genealogical research were kept, and documents deemed commonplace were probably disposed of by the initial creators or later culled. Most of the papers were originally stored at the Deshler-Morris House and at Marriott I's Philadelphia office. Beginning with the transfer of the House to the National Park Service, Elliston Perot III donated the papers in a series of gifts. After his death, Anna Morris, his wife continued to contribute to INDE until 1992. The Morrises also contributed parts of the papers to other Philadelphia institutions (see Related Collections.) Restrictions: No Associated Materials: Members of the Morris Family, primarily Elliston P. Morris III and his wife Anna, donated portions of the Morris Family Papers to other local repositories: Collection 2000 A, B, and C of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia holds substantial records relating to the business interests of Luke Morris, Samuel Buckley Morris I, and Elliston Perot Morris I as well as papers relating to Marriott Canby Morris I and the Perot Family. Collection 1008 at the Haverford College Library Special Collections, known as the Morris-Sansom Family Papers, has materials to several family members including Samuel Buckley Morris I, his children Samuel Buckley II and Beulah Morris Rhoads, and Samuel Buckley II's daughter, Hannah P. Morris. Collection P9895 at the Library Company of Philadelphia holds many pre-1900 glass plate negatives and other photographic material originally belonging to Marriott Canby Morris I whose subject matter closely mirrors that of the images in the INDE collection (this material passed through the EPMIII family and was later purchased). The Germantown Historical Society holds many individual items related to the family and to the Deshler-Morris House. The Swarthmore College Peace Collection has Elliston P. Morris III correspondence relating to his time as a conscientious objector during WWII. Collection 31, the Morris Family Papers, at the Monmouth County Historical Association relate to the Elliston P. Morris I's family ownership of houses at Sea Girt, New Jersey. MSS 2/0125-01, the Caspar Wistar (1801-1867) Family Letters and Poetry at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia had formerly been part of the Papers at INDE. The Elliston P. Morris (III) Papers at the Independence Seaport Museum hold albums relating to the family's 1925 European trip and a scrapbook relating to the Atlantic Deeper Waterways Association, an interest of Marriott Canby Morris I. These items were donated by Anna Morris after her husband's death. The Independence National Historical Park Archives holds a photographic reproduction of an album of silhouettes by Joseph Sansom (1767-1826) which includes images of Perot and Sansom family members. Early Morris Family MembersIncludes materials related to seventeenth- and eighteenth- century members of the Morris family. The papers of Captain Samuel Morris (1734-1812) who received a discharge on behalf of his troop from General George Washington comprise a major portion. His descendents defended their right to keep the discharge in a court case in 1886, and family members held the document until EPMIII gave it to INDE in 1954. A. Anthony Morris (1654-1721) B. Catherine Wistar Morris (1771-1859) I. Captain Samuel Morris II. Samuel Buckley Morris Family Includes materials related to Samuel Buckley's father, Luke W. Morris, and stepmother, Ann Pancoast Morris, and two of his children. A. Luke Wistar Morris (1768-1830) B. Ann Pancoast Morris (1764-1858) C. Samuel Buckley Morris (1791-1859) This sub-series holds mostly personal documents with very little of SBMI's business activities and his philanthropic activities evident. His daughter Beulah is responsible for the diary excerpts in which Samuel records his grief after his wife's 1831 death. The school reports and receipts for purchasing vegetables from their garden document his close oversight of his motherless children. They, in turn, contributed detailed drawings of their school held in the carriage house and of the Deshler-Morris House to a scrapbook "Reminiscences 1842 Germantown" presented to him. D. Samuel Morris (1827-1905) E. Beulah (Sansom) Morris Rhoads (1829-1923) Beulah's interest in family history is seen in her memo discussing heirlooms to be distributed after her death (her genealogical research was incorporated into Martha's and Elliston I's notes now in the Family Research and Perot-Sansom Family series). Letters relating memorable events such as her niece Hannah Morris's birth which she annotated as “rare” and “precious” comprises her correspondence; perhaps she herself weeded her files or relatives after her death chose only the special ones. III. Elliston Perot Morris Family Includes materials related to Elliston Perot Morris, his wife Martha Canby Morris, and three of his children. A. Elliston Perot Morris (1831-1914) Drawings from EPMI's student days of illustrating mechanical equipment to later sketches executed while vacationing are a highlight of this sub-series. A small amount of material relates to his extensive works for charities including the Freedmen's Association. Most of the material relating to the Deshler-Morris house maintenance is present in his tax and utility records. B. Martha Canby Morris (1836-1919) The bulk of outgoing correspondence was directed to her family in Wilmington in the immediate years after her marriage; she or her son retrieved it or it was given to her after her parents' deaths. Martha meticulously documented her household's collections of glassware, silverware, books, and other furnishings through lists now in the Personal Materials subsection. Her extensive genealogical research is present in this series as well as in the Family Research and Canby and Perot-Sansom Families series. C. Elizabeth Canby Morris (1866-1947) Elizabeth's youthful diaries frankly record her emotions and reactions to events such as her brother Samuel's death. The later diaries and outgoing correspondence related to European travel, in contrast, are written as if for publication. Relatively little relates to her ownership of the Deshler-Morris House, but two sets of account books document its servants' wages and work histories. D. Samuel Buckley Morris (1868-1886) E. Elliston Perot Morris (1872-1881) IV. Marriott Canby Morris Family The extensive personal papers of Marriott Canby Morris, Elliston's son, his wife Jane Rhoads Morris, and their children and spouses comprise this series. Much of this series relates to the family's life at their Germantown homes apart from the Deshler-Morris House. A. Marriott Canby Morris (1863-1948) Marriott I and his mother were the most active record creators and keepers in the family. Marriott meticulously documented his travels in letters and diaries and in fact took back travel letters from their recipients to act as his diaries. Despite her wishes, he kept his correspondence from his future wife so the long courtship between Marriott I and Jane Rhoads (Morris) may be understood (these letters are in her sub-series). Because he was an active member of the Germantown Boys Club since its early days, he accumulated copies of its minutes and publications, particularly in the early years of the twentieth century when he was an officer. Photographs and clippings relate the singular honor given for fifty-five years of service by former president Herbert Hoover on behalf of the Boys' Clubs of America in 1943. He also wrote a history of the Germantown organization. He and his family kept the extensive clippings and photographs related to his love of bicycling from his college days at Haverford into his old age. The sub-sub-series "Photographs" is divided into two sections. The first contains professional portraits and other images of Marriott. The second section holds images he took himself possibly for exhibition and/or publication. He exhibited his photographs locally and at least several were published in Haverford publications. His love of local history is seen in his interiors of the Deshler-Morris House and exteriors of Market Square. B. Jane Rhoads Morris (1870-1950) Jane did not enjoy others sharing and keeping her correspondence and in comparison to her husband comparatively few of her records remain. She and her family did keep the guestbooks in which friends including Native American students and international visitors signed their names. Family also kept the light-hearted poetry she wrote for special occasions. Some correspondence and her obituaries indicate her extensive work for social service agencies such as Friendship House, an organization promoting racial harmony in Philadelphia. C. Elliston Perot Morris (1899-1980) Some juvenile letters are present. Several items relate to the presentation of the DeshlerMorris House to the National Park Service. D. Anna Sayler Morris E. Marriott Canby Morris (1900-1992) F. Elizabeth Haines Morris G. Janet Morris Butler (1907-2010) V. Family Photographs Family members, primarily Marriott I, Martha, Elizabeth, and Elliston III created and collated these images mostly of family members and events. The Morris family used the latest cameras aimed at the amateur photographer including vest pocket cameras and the Kodak "1A." They evidently developed an alphanumerical system for filing their negatives; Elliston III later attempted to recreate the system (see below and Photo Box 3, Folder 3 for his keys). Elliston III consistently marked the number, subject and date on the corresponding prints prior to their donation to INDE. Most images were destined for photo albums; a few albums are present in this collection. A. Negatives "O" – Marriott I images "R" – Elliston III images (made with Rollerflex camera) [no "S" images present in this collection] "T" – Elliston III images (made with 2 in 1 Rollerflex camera) "V" – Elliston III images (made with vest pocket camera, #121 film) "W" -- Watch camera negatives attr. to Marriott I B. Lantern Slides Marriott I copied important early images of the Deshler-Morris House to show evidently in slide shows. C. Prints The numbered prints were given the alphanumeric code corresponding to the negative. The unnumbered prints do not possess the alphanumeric code. Family members created and collected these unnumbered photoprints, many of which related to the same subjects as the alphanumerics -- family scenes in D-M backyard and at Sea Girt. 1. Numbered 2. Unnumbered D. Albums These photo albums record family travel and shared interests such as Philadelphia scenes and Elliston III's babyhood. One album compiles the photographs Marriott I took of Haverford College when he was a student. VI. Deshler-Morris House Materials This series contains the images and other records that the family members including Elliston Perot I and III, Martha Canby, and Marriott accumulated about the House. They actively sought out documents about its early history such as the sales catalogs with the furnishings belonging to the House in Washington's time and kept items such as calendars and articles depicting the House. A. House B. Other Germantown Sites VII. Family Research Martha Canby and Elliston Perot studied the Morris family tree, and other family members consulted them. They provided information to Dr. Robert Moon's family genealogy. Their notes comprise the bulk of this series. VIII. Family Recipes Manuscript and printed recipes, loose and in book form, comprise this series. Upon her marriage and in subsequent decades, Martha Canby Morris collected recipes from friends, relatives, and the popular press, related to food, health, and housekeeping. It appears from the quantity of recipes belonging to Beulah Morris Rhoads that family members, after Beulah's death in 1923, incorporated their favorites. Elizabeth Canby Morris, who was in charge of the House's kitchen after her mother's death, added more recipes. A. Cookbooks B. Individual IX. Other Family Members Articles, correspondence, and other documents related to later nineteenth- and twentiethcentury Morris family representatives. X. Buckley Family Luke W. Morris married Elizabeth Morris Buckley, some of whose papers are included in this series. William Buckley, Elizabeth's father, was a merchant in Guyana (then Demerara) when he sent his daughters Elizabeth and Sarah in 1783 to relatives in Philadelphia; he and his wife returned to the Philadelphia area ten years later. Anthony, their son, became a merchant after an early voyage to China; his correspondence from Canton is included here. It is probable that Samuel Buckley Morris acquired these papers of his grandparents, mother, and uncle. A. William Buckley (1745-1815) B. Sarah Morris Buckley (1743-1830) C. Elizabeth Morris Buckley Morris (1772-1797) D. Anthony Morris Buckley (1777-1845?) E. Genealogical Research F. Unassociated XI. Perot-Sansom Families Hannah Perot married Samuel Buckley Morris (I), hence the connection to the Morris family. Her mother was born Sarah Sansom, and Hannah was the great niece of Philadelphia silhouettist Joseph Sansom and of his wife Beulah. Morris family members collected biographical material about Joseph and Beulah including a short memoir about her championing free African-Americans. Beulah Morris Rhoads, in particular, acquired items related to her great-great aunt after whom she was named. She also commissioned copying of Hannah Callendar Sansom's eighteenth-century diary in which Sansom describes the courtship of her daughter Sarah and future son-in-law Elliston Perot. Samuel Buckley Morris wrote the memoir of his father-in-law Elliston Perot present in this series. A. Elliston Perot (1747-1834) B. Other Perot Family Members C. Joseph Sansom (1767-1826) D. Beulah Biddle Sansom (b. 1765) E. Other Sansom Family Members F. Photographs G. Genealogical Research XII. Canby Family Martha Canby Morris not only kept the correspondence sent to her by her parents and siblings but also acquired their correspondence to other individuals. Her family also received her father's diaries from his Wilmington, Delaware home after his death and was tenacious in keeping the Thomas Jefferson correspondence directed to ancestor William Canby. Martha's extensive genealogical notes are also included. She acquired information about the Marriott family from whom her paternal grandmother was descended. She was related to the Bellah (Bellach) family through her mother Eliza Sipple Canby. Eliza's mother in a second marriage married John Bellah. Martha's (half) aunt Henrietta A. Bellah wrote her and her children faithfully and enclosed flowers. XIII. Wistar Family There are several familial connections between the Morris and Wistar families; the closest is the marriage between Rebecca Wistar and Captain Samuel Morris. It appears that Elliston Perot Morris I and Marriott Canby Morris I received many items such as genealogical research from Esther Fisher Wistar, a close friend. Items related to both Doctor Caspar Wistars attracted them particularly. Correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) is included. XIV. Unassociated Materials Several items that were included in the accessions composing the Morris Family Papers cannot be associated with specific family branches or individuals. This series holds this material. XV. Addendum Materials This series contains materials donated by the Morris family to Independence National Historical Park following the initial processing of the collection. The papers include documentation related to Samuel Buckley Morris’ family, Elliston Perot Morris’ family, Marriott Canby Morris’ family, early Morris family members, and members of the Buckley, Canby, Perot-Sansom, and Wistar families. This series includes correspondence, diaries, financial records, property records, legal documentation, and personal materials, as well as scrapbooks, oversize items, photographs, and photograph albums. Many of the photographs were taken by Marriott Canby Morris or his mother, Martha Canby Morris, and feature scenes from vacations in Sea Girt, New Jersey; European travels; and the Deshler-Morris House. The materials are arranged in order paralleling the main collection. AcronymsThe following acronyms are used throughout the list:131 - 131 W.
