Horseshoe Bend National Military Park Announces Annual Symposium
DAVISTON, AL
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park will host its annual symposium at Auburn University’s Pebble Hill in Auburn, AL, Saturday, August 20, 2022, from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM. The theme for the symposium will be “The Federal Road,” and will feature presentations by the authors of the 2019 publication “The Old Federal Road in Alabama: An Illustrated Guide.”

The speakers will include Dr. Gregory Waselkov, professor emeritus at the University of South Alabama, who will examine early land paths and waterways in Alabama; Ms. Raven Christopher, historical archaeologist at the University of South Alabama’s Center for Archaeological Studies, will demonstrate how historical maps and modern mapping software helped rediscover the original route of the Old Federal Road; and Dr. Kathryn Braund, professor emerita at Auburn University, will discuss the impact of the federal road on the Muscogee (Creek) Indians.

This event is co-sponsored by Auburn University’s Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities, the National Park Service and the Friends of Horseshoe Bend.

The symposium is FREE to the public and no registration is required.

Pebble Hill is located at 101 S. Debardeleben Street, Auburn University, Alabama 36849.
