CAMBRIDGE, Md. – On Sept. 24, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park will present the program “From Spirituals to Blues and Gospel: The History of a Multi-Century Musical Evolution.” The free musical event will be held at Greater Refuge Temple Church of God, 800 Robbins Street in Cambridge, Md., 21613, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration is not required; however, the venue has limited seating with a maximum occupancy of 300 people. The event will also be livestreamed on the park’s Facebook Page.
“What a way to culminate the ‘Year of Harriet Tubman’ in the state of Maryland and commemorate September as International Underground Railroad Month!” said Superintendent Deanna Mitchell of Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park. “I am extremely excited about bringing together numerous musical artists, living history reenactors and interpretation and education park rangers for this musical evolution to help further an all-important aspect of Harriet Tubman’s legacy – her deep and devoted connection to spirituals.”
Park Manager Dana Paterra of Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park said, “This musical celebration will be an emotional journey that is sure to inspire a better appreciation of Tubman’s spirituality and her gift for communicating through song. The Maryland Park Service is a proud partner alongside many others that are passionate about recognizing Tubman during her 200th birthday by bringing this experience to the community of Cambridge.”
This event is in partnership with the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, Maryland State Parks, Dorchester County Office of Tourism, The National Council for the Traditional Arts, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Educational Center, Chesapeake Conservancy, and Greater Refuge Temple Church of God.
