The nearly 7,000 photographic images in Hampton’s collection include historic daguerreotypes (some dating as early as 1849), ambrotypes, tintypes, stereographs, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, and lantern slides. The vast collection features photos of not just the Ridgely family and their friends and relations, but also many images of the enslaved and free workers on the estate from the early 1860s to the late 1940s. Snapshots from the 1890s and later document a wide variety of day to day activities including many kinds of sports and leisure activities: baseball, tennis, croquet, bicycling, fishing, boating, horseracing, foxhunting, painting, travel, social events, etc. Numerous images record exteriors and interiors of the mansion, outbuildings, and magnificent gardens and grounds over time. |
