Eliza Eichelberger Ridgely was the only child of Nicholas Greenbury Ridgely (1770-1829), a wealthy Baltimore merchant engaged in the importation of fine wines and Madeiras. He commissioned his daughter's portrait by Sully and in 1817 purchased an expensive harp her from Erard, the leading European manufacturer. He was one of only two Baltimoreans to host private dinners at their homes for the Marquis de Lafayette when he visited the city in 1824. He is buried in the cemetery at Hampton. No common descent between the two Ridgely families prior to Eliza’s marriage to John Carnan Ridgely of Hampton has been established. |
